The Makkah Central Area (MCA) Transport & Traffic Study aims at devising a set of physical and operational solutions to enhance access to/egress from the Holy Haram and improve circulation in its environs.
SETS was commissioned by the Ministry of Higher Education of KSA to undertake the technical management of the transport and traffic studies aimed at the development of short and long term integrated solutions for the Makkah Central Area (MCA). SETS’s team of specialists, engineers, as well as world-renowned experts undertook the following tasks:
Development of a “Makkah Transport Kit” which provided a comprehensive
Synthesis of the demographic, urban, and religious background of the city; existing transport patterns and infrastructure; planned expansion of Makkah road network and mass transit services and facilities; institutional framework; transport plans recommended in related previous studies; and planned development projects in the MCA.
Development of a comprehensive Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database of previous traffic and pedestrian studies, projected traffic and pedestrian activities, projected traffic based on a regional model of the entire city, and base maps of Makkah highlighting terrain topography, roads, cadastral subdivisions, buildings, etc.
Technical management of the work of 5 leading international consultancies in developing the transport solutions for Makkah. SETS’ responsibilities included developing the terms of reference; reviewing proposals; coordinating and supervising the work of the consultants through meetings and workshops that were held in Boston, Toronto, London, Beirut, and Jeddah; as well as reviewing and approving submittals.
Leading the effort undertaken by the MoHE team, the consultants, and the potential contractor to develop a synthesized “Transport Strategy” for the MCA, and supporting the execution of large-scale physical models to depict the strategy.
