This assignment is part of the "Sustainable Transport Project for Egypt" funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) / United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and implemented by the Egyptian Environment al Affairs Agency (EEAA).
Its aim is to introduce and implement a system to measure pollutant emissions from on-road medium and heavy trucks based on actual observations of emissions in Cairo under real traffic conditions. Accordingly, emission factors and the relevant emissions modeling are to be developed for medium and heavy trucks. The measurements shall be conducted using Portable (or on-board) Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) for representative samples of trucks, routs, and driving conditions in Greater Cairo.
The assignment involves several stages, including the following:
- Representative sampling of medium and heavy trucks;
- Measurements of their fuel consumption;
- Measurements of pollutants under actual traffic conditions using portable "onboard“ measurement instruments;
- Analysis of measurements and emissions modeling;
- Simplified, aggregated modeling to obtain an annual assessment of CO2 and other pollutant emissions from trucks, based on reference variables.
In this assignment, SETS Traffic & Transport team is responsible for:
- Project management and day-to-day operations
- Methodology and work plan for conducting the study;
- Sampling and traffic surveys;
- Emission measurements and modeling;
- Capacity building
